Household Accounting: Let’s Account for Household Work!

Being an Accounting scholar, Researcher and Academic, I spent a lot of time Accounting for business matters.


Reflecting on my personal experiences and observations, I realize that some people wrongly think that only paid work is worthy of recognition! The same or similar work done at home is not given equivalent recognition or respect.


The question that comes to mind is: Do people give recognition to money or work?


I disagree that only "paid" work deserves recognition. Therefore, I call for Accounting for Household work!

Have you ever wondered how much work is done by people who stay at home and do household work?




Let’s Account for and Monetize Household Work!


Step 1: To start with, let us note the number of hours we spend, for instance:

1.       Doing household work or

2.       Sacrificing paid work for household work


Examples include but not limited to the following:

1.       Preparing Food

2.       Looking after children and nurturing them

3.       Educating Children at home

4.       Caring for family members who are sick

5.       Caring for family and In Laws

6.       Caring for Elderly people

7.       Gardening

8.       Caring for pets and animals

9.       Providing emotional support

10.   Home’s Interior decoration


Step 2: Categorize household tasks


Step 3: Use minimum wage to determine costs saved if the work was given to someone who charged money (outsourcing).


Purpose:

At a minimum, my goal is to bring about respect and appreciation for everyone who works at home or does unpaid work!
