Lord Shiv ji is worshipped on Maha Shiv Ratri. Lord Shiv ji together with Lord Vishnu ji and Lord Brahma ji are the trinity of the Hindu Gods. As such, he is one of the Trimurti's in Hinduism. Lord Shiv ji has many names and forms. For instance, Bhole Naath (lord of innocence) and Mahadev (greatest God) are just two of the many names.
Lord Shivji is known as the lord of meditation, medicine and art amongst various other things. He is a Great Yogi and is referred as Adiyogi (the first yogi).
One of the aspects of Lord Shiv ji that fascinates me is his respect towards his wife, Goddess Mata Parvati. He regards his wife as his better half and they together represent one. Such unity, love, equality and mutual respect in relationship is admirable. Interestingly, this year’s celebration of Maha Shiv Ratri coincides with that of celebrating International Women’s Day!
In my knowledge, Lord Shiv ji is the only God who has a family. His wife is Goddess Mata Parvati (Goddess of Nature). His three Children are God Shri Kartike (the great Warrior), Goddess Shri Ashok Sundari and God Shri Ganesh (the first worshipped Hindu God).
Lord Shiv ji's vahan (vehicle) is Nandi ji.
Lord Shiv ji is worshipped in the form of a Shivling. Milk, water, Bel patra and flowers are offered to him in prayers. Chanting of "Om Namah Shivaye" is done during prayers.
My well wishes on the auspicious event of Maha Shiv Ratri.
